The story
Ardeshir Godrej started making locks in Bombay in 1897, with a loan from Merwanji Cama, a Parsi businessman. Safes followed soon after, and the Godrej name came to stand for security.
With his brother Pirojsha, the business moved into soap, steel furniture, typewriters and refrigerators. Each new product used the same factory skills and the same trusted brand.
In 2024 the family divided the group. Adi and Nadir Godrej took the Godrej Industries Group with five listed companies; Jamshyd Godrej and Smita Godrej Crishna took Godrej & Boyce and the land bank as the Godrej Enterprises Group.
