The story
Sajjan Jindal, son of industrialist O.P. Jindal, began in 1982 with a small steel re-rolling mill at Tarapur near Mumbai. In 1994 he started a much larger steel project at Vijayanagar in Karnataka, close to iron ore mines.
The steel business needed power, ports and a use for its slag. So the group built power plants, ports and a cement business that uses steel-plant slag. Each one served the steel plant first and then outside customers.
Five group entities had combined revenue of about US$23 billion in FY2025, the group says. It has since moved into paints and cars.
