The story
Two Danish engineers, Henning Holck-Larsen and Søren Kristian Toubro, started a small firm in Bombay in 1938. They imported machinery, then began servicing and making it when imports were cut off during the Second World War.
After independence the company grew into building factories, power plants, refineries and bridges. It has no promoter family; it is run by professional managers and owned by public shareholders, including an employee trust.
Over time L&T spun off and listed separate IT and engineering services companies. In FY2025-26 it reported consolidated revenue of ₹2,85,874 crore and a record order book of ₹7,40,327 crore.
