§1What this business is
Selected strains such as Rhizobium, Azotobacter, Azospirillum and phosphate-solubilising bacteria are grown from a mother culture in flasks and a fermenter, mixed into a sterilised, neutralised carrier (lignite or peat powder) or filled as liquid, cured and packed. Farmers use them on seed, seedling roots or soil to cut chemical fertiliser use. It is a lab-based business needing a microbiologist.
Capacity: 300 tonnes a year (both reports).
§2Is it right for you?
Who it is for
An agriculture or biotechnology graduate with lab experience, ideally from a bio-fertiliser unit (SIDBI).
Who it is not for
Someone without a science background or a plan to reach farmers.
Advantages
- Demand rising with natural and organic farming
- High margin on sales in both reports (about 30%)
- Raw materials are cheap; the value is in the culture
- Can expand into bio-pesticides (SIDBI)
Drawbacks
- Needs a trained microbiologist and a clean lab
- Product is regulated under the Fertiliser Control Order
- Short shelf life of live cultures
- Farmers are often unaware of bio-fertilisers (SIDBI)
Skills you need
- Microbiology and culture handling
- Fermenter and sterilisation work
- Quality testing to FCO norms
- Farmer and dealer marketing
Why difficulty 4/5: Lab skills, regulation and farmer education all needed.
§3Market
Who buys
- Farmers (pulses, oilseeds, cereals, sugarcane, vegetables)
- State agriculture departments and co-operatives
- FPOs and organic-farming groups
How it sells
- Fertiliser dealers
- Government supply schemes and tenders
- FPO and co-operative bulk orders
Good to know
- Rhizobium makes up the bulk of bio-fertiliser output (both reports).
- Both reports call their profit figures indicative only.

§6Schemes & subsidies
- AIFCentralUnclear3% interest subvention, up to ₹2 crore
- CGTMSECentralActiveNo collateral, up to ₹10 crore
- Stand-Up IndiaCentralClosed₹10 lakh – ₹1 crore loan
AIF lists bio-stimulant and organic-input production among eligible projects; CGTMSE and Stand-Up India (₹10 L–₹1 crore) fit the ₹69.52–75 L size. PMEGP's ₹50 L cap is below these project costs.
§7Money
How the investment is worked out: UP MSME 1-Connect ₹69.52 L: plant & machinery ₹51.00 L, furniture ₹0.80 L, contingencies ₹5.10 L, pre- and post-operative ₹1.20 L, working-capital margin ₹11.42 L; land and building owned or leased; own ₹26.84 L, term loan ₹42.68 L. SIDBI Stand-Up Mitra ₹74.50 L (rounded to ₹75 L): land 1,000 sq m ₹5.00 L, building 500 sq m ₹10.00 L, plant & machinery ₹45.00 L, other assets ₹3.00 L, P&P ₹1.00 L, contingencies ₹5.50 L, WC margin ₹5.00 L; term loan ₹50 L, own ₹25 L.
Working capital: UP report: 3 months of running costs ₹45.68 L (salaries ₹17.28 L, raw material ₹20.50 L, utilities ₹1.50 L, selling and admin ₹6.40 L); SIDBI: ₹15.00 L.
UP report 2024; SIDBI profile 2018 — its machinery and land prices will be higher now.
§8Export potential
Bio-fertilisers may be classified as microbial cultures or as fertilisers — confirm the code in the DGFT ITC-HS list.
§9Risks — where people fail
- Contaminated or weak batches
- Failing official quality samples
- Seasonal demand
- Slow farmer adoption
