§1What this business is

Resin glue is mixed and spread on core veneer by rollers; core and face veneers are laid on a frame of wooden battens and pressed in a steam-heated hydraulic press. The boards are trimmed on a double-diamond saw and sanded. Flush doors follow the same process with phenol formaldehyde glue, which makes them water resistant; side-cutting waste fuels the boiler. Boards go into furniture, cabinets and partitions; doors go to houses, offices and builders. Standards: IS 1659 (block board) and IS 2202 (flush doors).

Capacity: 1,26,000 sq m of block board/plywood and 84,000 sq m of flush doors a year, worth ₹191.1 lakh.

§2Is it right for you?

Who it is for

Someone from the timber or plywood trade with veneer sources and dealer or builder contacts.

Who it is not for

Someone without a reliable veneer and timber supply.

Advantages

Drawbacks

  • Timber and veneer supply depends on forest rules and prices
  • Formaldehyde resins need careful handling
  • Large working capital in stock
  • Strong competition from branded boards

Skills you need

  • Glue mixing and hot pressing
  • Grading timber and veneer
  • Running a thermic fluid boiler and press
  • Selling to dealers and builders

Why difficulty 4/5: Raw material supply, a heavy press and large working capital.

§3Market

§6Schemes & subsidies

Too big for PMEGP (₹50 lakh) and MUDRA (₹20 lakh); CGTMSE backs a loan without collateral and Stand-Up India gives SC/ST and women founders loans up to ₹1 crore.

§7Money

How the investment is worked out: Fixed capital ₹32.80 lakh (leased land 700 sq m ₹2.80 lakh + work shed 400 sq m ₹8.00 lakh; plant and machinery ₹21.30 lakh including erection, spares and furniture; pre-operative ₹0.70 lakh) + working capital for 3 months ₹38.91 lakh = ₹71.71 lakh.

Working capital: ₹12.97 lakh a month, mostly veneer, batten frames and resins (₹11.55 lakh); 3 months = ₹38.91 lakh.
