§1What this business is

Grey yarn from spinning mills is rewound onto soft spring tubes (cheeses) so dye can reach the inner layers, loaded onto the pegs of a high-temperature high-pressure dyeing machine, and dyed with reactive, direct, vat or sulphur dyes at a set temperature and time; hank yarn is dyed in open baths. The yarn is washed, dried and rewound onto paper cones and packed. Dyed yarn goes into shirts, dress material, bed linen, sweaters, furnishing and sports goods. Work can be done as job work for mills or by buying yarn and selling it dyed.

Capacity: DC-MSME: 2,000 kg a day (6,00,000 kg a year), with dyeing charges of ₹42 a kg — ₹252 L a year. Stand-Up Mitra: sales of ₹904.50 L at full capacity, at dyeing charges of ₹95–105 a kg.

§2Is it right for you?

Who it is for

A textile chemist or dyer with assured job work from mills or weavers in a textile cluster.

Who it is not for

Someone without deep pockets — the Stand-Up Mitra model only breaks even near 80% capacity.

Advantages

  • Weavers and knitters increasingly buy dyed yarn instead of running their own dye house
  • Yarn-dyed checks and stripes are popular in readymade shirts
  • Can work as job work for mills
  • Export demand for dyed yarn

Drawbacks

  • Large investment — about ₹1.5 crore in both profiles
  • The newer profile shows losses for the first four years
  • Heavy water use and coloured effluent
  • Needs a boiler and an effluent treatment plant

Skills you need

  • Dye chemistry and shade matching
  • Running HTHP dyeing machines and boilers
  • Effluent treatment
  • Winding and package preparation

Why difficulty 4/5: Large capital, chemistry, boilers, effluent rules and a long road to profit.

§3Market

Who buys

  • Knitting and weaving mills
  • Shirting and dress-material makers
  • Handloom weavers
  • Sweater, furnishing and sports-goods makers
  • Yarn traders and exporters

How it sells

  • Job work for mills
  • Sale of dyed yarn through yarn traders
  • Exports

Good to know

  • Stand-Up Mitra says mills now focus on spinning, weaving or knitting alone, so many buy dyed yarn or get yarn dyed on job work.
  • DC-MSME lists ready-made garments, hosiery, bag closing, sports goods, umbrellas, carpets, book binding, handloom and furnishing as users.
  • DC-MSME advises setting up only where a common effluent plant exists or with your own treatment plant.

§8Export potential

Confirm the HS code in the DGFT ITC(HS) lookup before you export

5205Cotton yarn with 85% or more cotton, not put up for retail sale

Export council / board: TEXPROCIL (The Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council)

  • The 6-digit line depends on single or multiple yarn, combed or carded, and count; confirm the 8-digit ITC(HS) line with DGFT.
  • Job-work dyeing is a service; only yarn you own and sell is your export.

§9Risks — where people fail

  • Effluent rules and possible closure orders
  • Low capacity use in slack seasons
  • Dye and fuel price rises
  • Shade claims from customers
