§1What this business is

HT and LT coils are wound on winding machines and assembled on a core of silicon-steel (CRGO) laminations. The connected assembly is dried, impregnated with insulating compound in a vacuum plant and dried again, then fitted into a fabricated MS tank with radiators and bushings, filled with transformer oil and tested to the Indian Standards (IS 2026, IS 1180). Main buyers are electricity boards, power distribution companies and rural electrification projects.

Capacity: 1,000 transformers of 100 kVA a year (product range 25–250 kVA).

§2Is it right for you?

Who it is for

An electrical engineer with transformer-industry experience and contacts in power utilities.

Who it is not for

A first-time founder with limited capital.

Advantages

  • Grid expansion and rural electrification keep demand going
  • Mostly winding and assembly — moderate machinery cost
  • Once approved by a utility, repeat tenders follow

Drawbacks

  • Thin margin (5.42%) and huge working capital
  • Sales depend on utility tenders and approvals; payments can be slow
  • Strict testing — a failed transformer brings penalties

Skills you need

  • Coil winding and core building
  • Transformer testing
  • Government tendering

Why difficulty 5/5: Large working capital, tender-based sales and strict testing.

§3Market

Who buys

  • State electricity boards and power distribution companies
  • Rural electrification projects
  • Industries and builders

How it sells

  • Utility tenders after vendor approval
  • Electrical contractors

Good to know

  • The profile links demand to the national power generation programme and rural electrification.

§6Schemes & subsidies

The ₹1.68 crore project is above the PMEGP and MUDRA limits; CGTMSE can cover a collateral-free loan.

§7Money

How the investment is worked out: Production machinery ₹6,72,500 + testing equipment ₹3,54,500 + maintenance machinery ₹98,000 + oil tank, tools, furniture and electrification ₹6,51,000 + pollution-control, energy-saving and power-connection items ₹81,000 + pre-operative ₹25,000 = fixed ₹18,82,000; working capital for 3 months ₹1,49,47,500. Total ₹1,68,29,500. Building rented.

Working capital: ₹49.83 L a month, of which raw material ₹44.71 L — CRGO laminations 15 t (₹15.00 L), enamelled winding wire 3 t (₹14.25 L), transformer oil 15,500 litres (₹5.43 L).

How to prepare a loan file

§8Export potential

Confirm the HS code in the DGFT ITC(HS) lookup before you export

8504.21Liquid dielectric transformers having a power handling capacity not exceeding 650 kVA

Export council / board: EEPC India

  • Confirm the 8-digit ITC(HS) line with DGFT or your customs broker before shipping.
  • You need an Import Export Code (IEC) from DGFT before the first shipment.

§9Risks — where people fail

  • Delayed payments by utilities
  • Copper, aluminium and CRGO price swings
  • Penalties for failures within the guarantee period

§1030 / 60 / 90-day plan

A general plan that applies to any business. A plan for this business will be added after research.

  1. Days 1–30: Visit a working distribution transformer manufacturing unit, ask 10 buyers about price and quantity, and get quotations from 3 suppliers.
  2. Days 31–60: Udyam and the licences you need (Udyam registration, GST registration), a project report (DPR), and the scheme or loan file.
  3. Days 61–90: Space and machines, trial production, and first deliveries to 10 customers.
