§1What this business is

Carbon-steel blanks are punched and deep-drawn into pans and pots; larger hollow ware is roll-formed and seam-welded. The pieces are sand-blasted, pickled, phosphated and shot-blasted, pre-heated, sprayed with enamel or ceramic coats in two or three layers and fired at 500–1,100 °C. Decals or hand painting are added, handles fitted, and the ware is buffed and packed. Cast-iron ware bought from foundries can be coated the same way.

Capacity: 250 tonnes a year of enamelled and ceramic-coated ware — pans, casseroles, cookers and skillets, with or without Bakelite handles. Runs at 40% in year 1 and 80% in year 5.

§2Is it right for you?

Who it is for

A technical ITI, diploma or graduate with manufacturing or kitchenware sales experience.

Who it is not for

Someone without capital for furnaces and a coating line.

Advantages

  • Cheaper than stainless or branded cookware — suits low and middle-income homes
  • Every home, hotel and canteen replaces utensils over time
  • Market is mostly unorganised, leaving room for a quality brand
  • Same line can coat cast-iron ware

Drawbacks

  • Enamel furnaces and shot-blasting lines are costly (₹64.65 L of main machines)
  • Chipped enamel brings complaints
  • Pickling and phosphating need effluent control
  • Competition from non-stick and stainless ware

Skills you need

  • Deep drawing and press work
  • Enamel formulation and firing
  • Decal and colour design
  • Selling to utensil wholesalers

Why difficulty 4/5: Multi-stage coating line, furnaces and effluent control.

§3Market

Who buys

  • Utensil wholesalers and retailers
  • Hotels, restaurants and canteens
  • Households in low and middle-income groups
  • Online kitchenware sellers

How it sells

  • Distributors to utensil markets
  • Own brand in retail and online

Good to know

  • The report says enamel and ceramic-coated ware is made mostly by small and medium units, with few organised players at the high end.
  • It suggests enamelled carbon steel or cast iron as the product for a new unit.
