§1What this business is

Natural and synthetic rubber is masticated and compounded with rubber chemicals on mixing mills. Measured amounts of compound are moulded in a multi-daylight hydraulic press; after the first cure the sheets may be cured again under steam in a post-cure chamber, then kept under load while they cool so they do not warp. Sheets are tested and despatched. Buyers are hawai chappal, slipper and sandal makers, and footwear sole cutters.

Capacity: 75,000 sheets of 4 kg each a year.

§2Is it right for you?

Who it is for

Someone with rubber-compounding experience near a footwear cluster.

Who it is not for

Someone without rubber technology knowledge or footwear buyers.

Advantages

  • Slippers and sandals are bought by every household, so sole sheets sell all year
  • Can supply many small footwear units in a cluster
  • Compound recipe can be tuned for softness and colour

Drawbacks

  • Rubber prices move with world markets
  • Needs boilers, a heavy press and a large crew
  • EVA and PVC soles compete with rubber sheets

Skills you need

  • Rubber compounding and mill mixing
  • Press curing and post-curing
  • Testing density, hardness and finish
  • Selling to footwear units

Why difficulty 4/5: Rubber technology, boilers, a heavy press and a crew of 24.

§3Market

Who buys

  • Hawai chappal and slipper makers
  • Sandal and footwear sole cutters
  • Footwear clusters and their traders

How it sells

  • Direct supply to footwear units
  • Rubber and footwear-material traders

Good to know

  • Sheets are sold by count and weight; the profile's sheet weighs 4 kg.

§6Schemes & subsidies

CGTMSE for a loan without collateral; Stand-Up India for SC/ST and women founders. At ₹54.5 lakh the project is above the PMEGP ₹50 lakh and MUDRA limits.

§7Money

How the investment is worked out: The NSIC profile prints one figure for machinery and equipment plus 3 months' working capital (raw material, utilities and salary): ₹54.5 lakh. It gives no split between the two, and land and building are not included.

Working capital: Working capital for 3 months (raw material, utilities and salary) is inside the ₹54.5 lakh total; the profile prints no separate figure.
