§1What this business is

Oat grain is cleaned (magnet, screen, aspirator, de-stoner) and de-hulled to leave the groat; the groats are kilned with steam and heat for flavour and shelf life, then steel-cut or rolled into flakes, roasted and packed. Oats are eaten mainly as a breakfast food. The DPR plans a 240 kg-an-hour line in rented premises.

Capacity: 240 kg an hour; 5,76,000 kg of oat grain a year gives 4,32,000 kg of oats after 25% wastage. The DPR starts at 40% (1,72,800 kg) and reaches 60% in year 5.

§2Is it right for you?

Who it is for

A food processor with retail distribution, or one with a contract to pack oats for a brand.

Who it is not for

A first-time founder without a sales channel — branded competition is strong.

Advantages

  • Oats are the fastest-growing breakfast-cereal category, per the DPR
  • Health-food image helps sales in cities
  • One line can make steel-cut or rolled (quick-cooking) oats
  • Low break-even (36%) in the DPR

Drawbacks

  • Costly grain — ₹172.80 L of oat grain against ₹233.86 L of sales in year 1
  • In India oats are mostly grown for fodder, per the DPR — food-grade grain is limited
  • Big brands dominate retail shelves
  • Largest working capital among these PMFME models (₹14.44 L)

Skills you need

  • Kilning and moisture control
  • Setting the flaking rolls
  • Packaging for shelf life
  • Selling to modern trade and online

Why difficulty 3/5: The process is simple; selling against big brands with costly grain is the hard part.

§3Market

Who buys

  • Urban households
  • Supermarkets and grocery chains
  • Hotels, hostels and institutional kitchens
  • Brands buying private-label oats

How it sells

  • Distributors to modern retail
  • Online marketplaces
  • Private-label supply

Good to know

  • The DPR puts India's organised breakfast-cereal market at Rs 1,400 crore, with oats holding about 30% of value.
  • The DPR prices a 1 kg packet at ₹140 in year 1.
