§1What this business is

Raw cow hides are soaked, limed, fleshed, delimed, pickled and chrome-tanned to wet blue, then shaved to 0.8–0.9 mm, neutralised, retanned and fat-liquored with a water-proofing agent and dyed. The crust is snuffed, impregnated with a soft resin, embossed with a fine hair-cell plate, padded and sprayed with a pigment–PU season, top-coated with a water-proofing agent and lacquer, and plated lightly. The leather must be soft, defect-free, stretchy and colour-fast. Leather garment makers in Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai and Kanpur buy it, many for export.

Capacity: 30,000 cow hides a year — about 7,50,000 sq ft of garment leather — valued at ₹4.13 crore.
