How to start
- Get an Import Export Code (IEC) from DGFT online; it is free and linked to your PAN.
- Register with APEDA and get your RCMC (Registration-cum-Membership Certificate) through the DGFT e-RCMC system.
- Use the separate makhana HS codes (2008 19 21/22/29) on the shipping bill, in force since July 2025, so your exports are counted correctly.
- Graded raw (popped) makhana is most of the trade today; roasted and flavoured packs earn far more per kilo.

Watch out for
- Before July 2025 makhana had no separate HS code, so older export figures are not comparable.
- Three markets (United States, Canada, UAE) take most exports, so demand is concentrated.
