The story
Goa was a Portuguese colony until 1961, and its beaches, churches, food and festivals made it a favourite of hippie travellers in the 1960s and 1970s. Charter flights from Europe, Indian holiday-makers and later the Mopa airport turned tourism into Goa's biggest service industry. North Goa's beaches from Calangute to Arambol are the busiest, while South Goa has quieter resorts; Carnival, Shigmo and year-end festivals bring peak crowds.
