Trade agreement

ASEAN–India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA) →Two agreements: the India–Malaysia CECA (in force 1 July 2011) and the ASEAN–India Trade in Goods Agreement (1 January 2010).

Their import rules

  • Food must meet Malaysia's Food Act 1983 and Food Regulations 1985, enforced by the Food Safety and Quality Division of the Ministry of Health.
  • Plants, animals and food are inspected at the border by the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services (MAQIS).
  • Regulated electrical and building products need SIRIM certification; halal-labelled food needs certification recognised by JAKIM (Halal Malaysia).
  • Check new SPS (food, plant, animal health) and TBT (product standards) notices for this market on India Trade Portal before you ship.

How to find buyers

  • Register on the Department of Commerce Trade Connect e-platform (trade.gov.in) to get trade enquiries and reach the Indian mission's commerce wing.
  • Join your Export Promotion Council (EPC) and apply for its buyer–seller meets and India pavilions at fairs in this country; MAI scheme support may cover part of the cost.
  • Write to the commerce wing of the Indian embassy or high commission with your product, HS code and catalogue; ask for importer lists and trade enquiries.
  • MIHAS in Kuala Lumpur is an international halal products fair.
