Understand this first
Subsidy, loan, interest subvention and guarantee — four different things
Many people hear “subsidy” and think the money comes free. In fact, most schemes are tied to a loan.
- Subsidy सब्सिडी
- The government pays part of the project cost — after you repay the loan, or adjusted against the loan.
- PMEGP · PMFME · NHB
- Interest subvention ब्याज छूट
- You take the loan; the government pays part or all of the interest.
- CM YUVA · AIF
- Loan कर्ज़
- A bank loan on easier terms — but you repay the interest and the principal yourself.
- Mudra · Stand-Up India
- Guarantee गारंटी
- The government guarantees the loan to the bank, so you are not asked for collateral.
- CGTMSE
The facts
Three things about schemes that nobody tells you
- The bank comes before the scheme. You get the subsidy only when the bank sanctions the loan. Under PMEGP, banks reject 40–50% of applications (Rajya Sabha Standing Committee, Mar 2026) — so get your file and CIBIL score in order first.
- You put in your own money. Most schemes need a 5–15% own contribution, and working capital on top.
- Websites go out of date. NHB rates changed on 21 Aug 2026 and Stand-Up India ended on 31 Mar 2025 — yet many sites still show the old terms. Always confirm on the official portal.
