The story
Dr. S.K. Burman began making Ayurvedic medicines in Calcutta in 1884. Patients called him 'Daktar Burman', and the name Dabur comes from those two words.
His son set up a research unit in 1919 and used machines to make medicines in larger amounts. Over the next decades Dabur moved from medicines into everyday products such as hair oil, toothpaste and honey.
In 1998 the family made a rare choice for an Indian family business: it handed day-to-day management to professionals and kept its board seats and shares. Dabur now sells in over 100 countries.
