§1What this business is

Coir geotextiles are open-mesh mats woven from 2-ply coir yarn, 1–2 m wide and 50 m long, with ¼, ½ or 1 inch openings. Laid on slopes and embankments, they hold soil against water erosion and help grass seeds grow, then rot away and add organic matter to the soil. On a power loom a motor lifts the shed and beats the slay; one operator and one helper can weave about 240 sq m of matting a day, with a bobbin winding machine and creel stand.

Capacity: 300 sq m per shift, 2 shifts, 300 days = 1,80,000 sq m a year; year 1 at 70%.

§2Is it right for you?

Who it is for

A coir-belt entrepreneur with contacts among road, rail and irrigation contractors.

Who it is not for

Someone without reliable power or access to infrastructure buyers.

Advantages

  • Only 5 people for 1,80,000 sq m a year
  • More even quality than hand weaving
  • Eco-friendly erosion-control product
  • Demand from infrastructure works

Drawbacks

  • Tender-driven demand
  • Needs steady power for two shifts
  • Coir yarn is most of the cost
  • One loom — a breakdown stops all output

Skills you need

  • Power loom operation and maintenance
  • Weaving to mesh specification
  • Tendering and selling to contractors
  • Buying yarn

Why difficulty 3/5: Small crew, but sales depend on tenders and one machine.

§3Market

Who buys

  • Road, railway and highway contractors
  • Irrigation, canal and river-bank protection works
  • Slope protection and landscaping projects

How it sells

  • Government tenders
  • Supply to contractors
  • Coir Board-linked marketing

Good to know

  • The profile describes the fabric as a check against water erosion that conserves moisture and adds organic matter as it degrades.

§6Schemes & subsidies

₹25 L or less: inside PMEGP's ₹50 L manufacturing limit; CGTMSE for collateral-free credit; MUDRA up to ₹20 L; Stand-Up India for SC/ST and women. The Coir Board also runs support schemes for coir units — check its website.

§7Money

How the investment is worked out: Building ₹6.50 L + machinery ₹10.00 L (automatic loom with double-head bobbin winding, cops winding, flyer and electrification) + working capital ₹5.84 L = ₹22.34 L (term loan ₹15.68 L, working-capital loan ₹5.54 L, promoter 5% ₹1.12 L).

Working capital: Working-capital gap ₹5.84 L in year 1.

Profile prepared June 2018 — machinery costs will be higher now.

§8Export potential

Export council / board: Coir Board

  • The HS line for coir geotextiles has not been checked against the official list yet; ask the Coir Board or a customs broker.
  • You need an Import Export Code (IEC) from DGFT before the first shipment.

§9Risks — where people fail

  • Irregular, tender-based orders
  • Loom breakdown
  • Yarn price rise
  • Late payment on government projects
