§1What this business is

Denim fabric is inspected, spread in layers, cut with a motorised blade from card or metal patterns, and stitched on an assembly line, mostly with double-needle machines. Garments are then washed in tumbler machines — sometimes with chemicals or pebbles for a faded look — cleaned of loose threads, steam-pressed and packed by size and design. Buyers range from low-price local trade to branded retail.

Capacity: 100 garments a day, 30,000 a year (one 8-hour shift, 300 days); 60% use in year 1.

§2Is it right for you?

Who it is for

Someone with tailoring or garment-trade experience and buyer contacts in wholesale or retail.

Who it is not for

Someone who cannot manage a line of 10+ operators and quality checks.

Advantages

  • Denim is worn by all ages, all year
  • Machines can also make home furnishings (bed sheets, pillow covers)
  • Labour-intensive work suits Indian costs
  • Washes and finishes add value

Drawbacks

  • Fashion changes quickly
  • Price range is huge (₹250 to ₹5,000) and the low end is crowded
  • Washing with chemicals needs effluent care
  • Fabric prices move with cotton

Skills you need

  • Pattern making and cutting
  • Assembly-line supervision
  • Wash and finish control
  • Selling to wholesalers and brands

Why difficulty 3/5: Machines are standard; managing a stitching line and selling in a crowded market is the challenge.

§3Market

Who buys

  • Men, women and children — students and office-goers keep 4–5 denim garments (report)
  • Wholesale garment traders
  • Retail shops and brands

How it sells

  • Garment wholesale markets
  • Supply to retailers and brands
  • Export buyers in Europe and America (report notes Asian makers are competitive)

Good to know

  • Prices range from about ₹250 to ₹5,000 a garment (report).
  • Classic blue and black dominate; coloured denim has gone out of trend (report).
