§1What this business is

Aluminium billets are melted in an induction furnace and poured into moulds to make sole plates. The plates are pickled in acid, pre-heated to 350–400 °C and sprayed with PTFE (non-stick) powder in an electrostatic coating booth. Plastic covers and handles are injection-moulded. The heating element and thermostat are wired over the base plate, the cord is fitted, covers are assembled, and each iron is tested and packed.

Capacity: 100 irons a day, 30,000 a year; 50% use in year 1.

§2Is it right for you?

Who it is for

Someone with appliance or foundry experience and a dealer network.

Who it is not for

Someone without capital to survive a thin first year.

Advantages

  • Every household and student hostel needs an iron
  • Replacement demand is steady
  • Report cites growing global demand
  • Same moulding and coating line can make other small appliances

Drawbacks

  • Year-1 profit is very thin (₹0.68 L)
  • BIS certification is compulsory
  • Strong national brands and imports
  • PTFE powder is the biggest raw-material cost

Skills you need

  • Aluminium casting
  • Powder coating
  • Injection moulding
  • Electrical safety testing and BIS compliance

Why difficulty 4/5: Casting, coating, moulding and BIS testing in one plant, with a thin first year.

§3Market

Who buys

  • Households
  • Students and hostels (school uniforms must be ironed, per the report)
  • Office-goers

How it sells

  • Electrical-appliance dealers and shops
  • Online marketplaces

Good to know

  • The report cites a global electric iron market of USD 1.0 billion in 2018, growing at 8.3% a year.
  • It notes ironing extends fabric life and is an alternative to chemical dry cleaning.

§6Schemes & subsidies

PMEGP and CGTMSE fit the ₹29.44 L project; MUDRA covers up to ₹20 L; Stand-Up India for SC/ST/women founders.

§7Money

How the investment is worked out: Samadhan report: plant & machinery ₹22.00 L + furniture ₹1.33 L + working capital ₹6.11 L = ₹29.44 L; building 2,000 sq ft own/rented, not costed.

Working capital: Working capital ₹6.11 L (bank ₹5.50 L) — 20 days of raw material and 10 days of finished goods.
