§1What this business is

Steel parts are cleaned in hot alkali, etched in a chromic-sulphuric bath, plated in a hard-chrome tank with a rectifier, rinsed and, for hardened steel, baked to remove hydrogen. Hard chrome gives a thick, very hard, wear-resistant layer and is also used to build up worn parts. Customers are engineering, textile-machinery, hydraulics and tool-making units near industrial areas.

Capacity: 50 sq ft of plated surface a day; 15,000 sq ft a year; year 1 at 50%.

§2Is it right for you?

Who it is for

Someone in an industrial area with plating or engineering experience.

Who it is not for

Someone in a town without engineering units, or unwilling to invest in pollution control.

Advantages

  • Steady job work wherever engineering industry is clustered
  • Repair and rebuilding of worn parts adds business
  • Moderate machinery cost (₹9.00 L)
  • High value per sq ft plated

Drawbacks

  • Chromic acid is toxic; hexavalent chrome is tightly controlled
  • Needs fume extraction and effluent treatment
  • Work depends on nearby industry
  • Quality failures (peeling, cracks) lose customers

Skills you need

  • Electroplating chemistry and bath control
  • Rectifier and current settings
  • Effluent and fume control
  • Selling job work to factories

Why difficulty 4/5: Hazardous chemicals and strict pollution rules make it harder than it looks.

§3Market

Who buys

  • Engineering and machine-tool units
  • Hydraulic cylinder and piston-rod makers
  • Textile machinery, roller and die users
  • Repair shops rebuilding worn parts

How it sells

  • Direct job work for factories
  • Repeat contracts with OEM suppliers

Good to know

  • The report charges ₹750 per sq ft in year 1, rising ₹30 a year.
  • It says chrome layers must be at least 13 microns thick for wear resistance.

§5Licences & registration

  1. Udyam
  2. GST
  3. State pollution board consent — electroplating is a red-category industry; effluent treatment is needed
  4. Hazardous waste authorisation for chrome sludge
  5. Factory licence if worker numbers cross the limit

§6Schemes & subsidies

₹20.56 L project fits PMEGP and CGTMSE; MUDRA covers up to ₹20 L; Stand-Up India for SC/ST or women founders.

§7Money

How the investment is worked out: Report cost of project ₹20.56 L: building/shed 1,000 sq ft ₹4.00 L, plant & machinery ₹9.00 L, furniture ₹2.00 L, working capital ₹5.56 L. Finance: term loan ₹13.50 L, own ₹2.06 L, working-capital loan ₹5.00 L.

Working capital: Working capital ₹5.56 L (bank ₹5.00 L) — 15 days of chemicals and finished jobs.

§8Export potential

A local service — there is no goods export for this business.

§9Risks — where people fail

  • Pollution board action or closure
  • Worker health from chrome fumes
  • Rejections and rework
  • Slow orders if local industry slows

§1030 / 60 / 90-day plan

A general plan that applies to any business. A plan for this business will be added after research.

  1. Days 1–30: Visit a working hard chromium plating (job work) unit, ask 10 buyers about price and quantity, and get quotations from 3 suppliers.
  2. Days 31–60: Udyam and the licences you need (Udyam, GST), a project report (DPR), and the scheme or loan file.
  3. Days 61–90: Space and machines, trial production, and first deliveries to 10 customers.
