§1What this business is

Moulds are designed on CAD software with the right gate, wall thickness, draft and texture, then steel or aluminium blocks are turned, milled, ground, spark-eroded, polished and heat-treated. Finished moulds are tried on the unit's own injection-moulding machines before delivery. Plastic processors making appliance parts, containers, auto parts and profiles buy them.

Capacity: 100 tonnes of moulds and dies a year for extrusion and injection moulding; runs at 40% in year 1 and 75% in year 5. Selling prices ₹150–800 a kg.

§2Is it right for you?

Who it is for

An ITI, diploma or engineering graduate with tool-room or plastics-moulding experience.

Who it is not for

Someone without precision-machining skills.

Advantages

  • Material is only about a third of sales — high value added
  • Plastic use keeps growing in every industry
  • Asia is gaining mould-making work worldwide (report)
  • Own moulding machines allow trials and short production runs

Drawbacks

  • Long design-and-trial cycle for each mould
  • Needs skilled tool makers and CAD/CAM designers
  • Large machine investment for small tonnage
  • Payment often comes only after mould approval

Skills you need

  • Mould design (gates, cooling, draft)
  • CNC, EDM and polishing
  • Mould trials on injection machines
  • Costing and quoting moulds

Why difficulty 5/5: High-skill precision work and nearly ₹2 crore of investment.

§3Market

Who buys

  • Injection-moulding and blow-moulding units
  • Appliance and electronics makers
  • Auto-component makers
  • Container, closure and profile makers

How it sells

  • Direct orders from processors
  • Vendor registration with OEMs

Good to know

  • The report notes that most plastic moulds are made of aluminium alloys except for high-pressure injection parts.
  • Training centres named: Indo German Tool Room (Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Chennai) and CTTC Bhubaneswar.

§6Schemes & subsidies

Too large for PMEGP; CGTMSE can guarantee the bank loan without collateral and Stand-Up India can fund SC/ST and women founders.

§7Money

How the investment is worked out: Land ₹30 L + building ₹60 L + plant & machinery ₹89.35 L + fixtures and electrical ₹4 L + preliminary ₹2.50 L + working-capital margin ₹9.11 L = ₹194.96 L. Finance: promoter ₹55.57 L, bank loan ₹139.39 L.

Working capital: Gross ₹14.87 L (inventories ₹2.08 L, receivables ₹6.52 L, overheads ₹4.19 L, less creditors ₹2.08 L); own margin ₹9.11 L, bank ₹5.76 L.
