§1What this business is

Aluminium alloy sheets or circles are cut, deep-drawn into the body and lid, trimmed, notched and drilled; lugs, handles and the vent pipe are fixed; the cooker is buffed, polished, pressure-tested and packed. Regulators, Bakelite handles, rubber gaskets, fusible plugs, screws and rivets are usually bought from outside. 3-litre and 5-litre sizes sell most.

Capacity: 100 cookers a day, 30,000 a year (10-hour day); 50% use in year 1.

§2Is it right for you?

Who it is not for

Someone not ready for BIS testing and quality control.

Advantages

  • Every kitchen needs one; demand grows with LPG use
  • Ujjwala connections opened a rural market (report)
  • Aluminium scrap is resold
  • Bought-out parts keep the process simple

Drawbacks

  • BIS certification is compulsory and costly to maintain
  • Strong national brands
  • Aluminium prices swing
  • Safety failures can mean liability

Skills you need
