§1What this business is
PTFE (Teflon) moulding powder is filled into a mould and pressed in a hydraulic press, then sintered in an oven so the particles fuse. The part is cooled and, where needed, machined on a high-speed lathe. PTFE handles high temperatures, resists chemicals, is self-lubricating and insulates well, so rings, oil seals, gaskets, rods, bushes and bearings are made to buyers' specifications.
Capacity: 17,500 kg of products a year worth ₹135.62 L (₹775 a kg); single shift.
§2Is it right for you?
Who it is for
A machinist or plastics engineer with contacts in auto, electrical and chemical plants.
Who it is not for
Someone without engineering buyers — the product is made to drawings, not for open retail.
Advantages
- High-performance plastic used across many industries
- Small shed and modest machinery
- Repeat orders for seals, gaskets and bushes
Drawbacks
- Thin margin (9%) because PTFE powder is costly
- Sintering needs careful temperature control
- Engineering buyers demand tight tolerances
Skills you need
- Compression moulding and sintering
- Lathe machining to drawings
- Industrial sales
Why difficulty 3/5: Moderate capital; precision moulding and sintering skills needed.
§3Market
Who buys
- Automobile and auto-component makers
- Electrical and chemical industries
How it sells
- Direct supply against drawings
- Industrial hardware and seal dealers
Good to know
- The report links demand to fast growth in automobile, electrical and chemical industries.

§5Licences & registration
- Udyam registration
- GST registration
- State Pollution Control Board consent to establish and operate, where the state requires it
- Factory licence if your worker count crosses the Factories Act limit
§6Schemes & subsidies
- PMEGPCentralActive15–35% subsidy
- MudraCentralActiveLoan up to ₹20 lakh, no collateral
- CGTMSECentralActiveNo collateral, up to ₹10 crore
- Stand-Up IndiaCentralClosed₹10 lakh – ₹1 crore loan
PMEGP fits (₹42.10 L, under the ₹50 L manufacturing limit); MUDRA up to ₹20 L; CGTMSE for a loan without collateral; Stand-Up India for SC/ST and women founders.
§7Money
How the investment is worked out: Fixed capital ₹13.00 L (hydraulic presses, sintering oven ₹3.00 L, lathe and machines ₹3.00 L, moulds, testing, office equipment, pre-operative) + working capital for 3 months ₹29.10 L = ₹42.10 L. Shed rented (₹2,500 a month).
Working capital: Working capital for 3 months ₹29.10 L; PTFE powder 1,500 kg a month costs ₹9.00 L.
Prices from 2003 — machinery, material and selling prices will be much higher now.
§8Export potential
Confirm the HS code in the DGFT ITC(HS) lookup before you export
Export council / board: PLEXCONCIL (The Plastics Export Promotion Council)
- Confirm the 8-digit ITC(HS) line with DGFT or your customs broker before shipping.
- Some PTFE rods, sheets and seals may fall under other headings of Chapter 39 or 84 — check the exact item.
- You need an Import Export Code (IEC) from DGFT before the first shipment.
§9Risks — where people fail
- PTFE powder price swings
- Cracked or porous parts after sintering
- Fumes if sintering overheats
§1030 / 60 / 90-day plan
A general plan that applies to any business. A plan for this business will be added after research.
- Days 1–30: Visit a working ptfe (teflon) moulded products unit, ask 10 buyers about price and quantity, and get quotations from 3 suppliers.
- Days 31–60: Udyam and the licences you need (Udyam registration, GST registration), a project report (DPR), and the scheme or loan file.
- Days 61–90: Space and machines, trial production, and first deliveries to 10 customers.
