§1What this business is
Steel rods, flats, pipes and sheets are cut, twisted, bent on benches and presses, forged with floral designs and welded together, then sand-blasted, pickled and painted. Today's 'wrought iron' items are made from hot-rolled forging-grade mild steel. Two reports: a small KVIC profile and a larger Samadhan report with a forging furnace and hammer.
Capacity: KVIC: 6,000 pieces (tables, chairs, sofas, beds) a year. Samadhan: 10 items a shift, 3,000 a year (8 hours, 300 days), year 1 at 50%.
§2Is it right for you?
Who it is for
A fabricator or blacksmith with a good eye for design.
Who it is not for
Someone without welding or design skills.
Advantages
- Can start small (₹4.79 L) and grow
- Durable and decorative — popular for homes, gardens and hotels
- Railings, gates and fences add steady orders
Drawbacks
- Organised brands lead the furniture market
- Design skill decides price
- Rust if surface treatment is poor
Skills you need
- Forging, bending and welding
- Ornamental design
- Surface treatment and painting
Why difficulty 3/5: Needs metalwork and design skill; the larger unit needs forging equipment.
