The story
Daman, a former Portuguese enclave on the Gujarat coast, drew factories from the 1980s because of union-territory tax benefits and its place between Mumbai and Surat. Plastic moulders making buckets, containers, furniture and pens became the largest group, along with packaging, paper and electrical units in Kachigam, Dabhel and Bhimpore. Many well-known household plastic brands have units here.
In numbers
Daman district had 1,232 rubber, plastic and petro-based units, 269 cotton textile units, 252 paper units and 252 electrical machinery units among its micro and small enterprises.
