Trade agreement

India–Japan CEPA →India–Japan CEPA in force since 1 August 2011. Claim the preferential duty with a Certificate of Origin.

Their import rules

  • Every food import is notified at a quarantine station under Japan's Food Sanitation Act (Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare); shipments may be tested for residues and additives.
  • Plants and plant products are inspected by MAFF's Plant Protection Station and need an Indian phytosanitary certificate.
  • Electrical appliances need the PSE mark under Japan's electrical safety law; customs clearance is through Japan Customs.
  • Check new SPS (food, plant, animal health) and TBT (product standards) notices for this market on India Trade Portal before you ship.

How to find buyers

  • Register on the Department of Commerce Trade Connect e-platform (trade.gov.in) to get trade enquiries and reach the Indian mission's commerce wing.
  • Join your Export Promotion Council (EPC) and apply for its buyer–seller meets and India pavilions at fairs in this country; MAI scheme support may cover part of the cost.
  • Write to the commerce wing of the Indian embassy or high commission with your product, HS code and catalogue; ask for importer lists and trade enquiries.
  • FOODEX Japan at Tokyo Big Sight is Japan's international food and drink fair; Japanese buyers expect samples, strict specs and slow, steady relationships.
