How to start

  1. Get an Import Export Code (IEC) from DGFT online; it is free and linked to your PAN.
  2. Register with MPEDA and get your RCMC (Registration-cum-Membership Certificate) through the DGFT e-RCMC system.
  3. Most small exporters start by merchant-exporting through an approved processing plant, then build their own pre-processing centre.
  4. Antibiotic residue testing of farmed shrimp is mandatory before export.

Certificates and registrations

  • MPEDA registration (RCMC) — compulsory for seafood exporters
  • Export Inspection Council (EIC) approval of the processing plant; EU-listed plant to ship to the EU
  • HACCP plan; BAP or ASC farm and plant certification for many US and EU buyers

Watch out for

  • US anti-dumping and countervailing duties on Indian shrimp, and US tariff changes, hit margins directly.
  • Turtle-excluder and wild-catch rules can block wild shrimp from the US.
