§1What this business is
You dig a pond, or use an old one, stock it with carp seed such as rohu, catla and mrigal, and raise the fish for 8–12 months. They are sold at the local market, to contractors and to fish traders. A reliable water supply and good feed management are essential.
§2Is it right for you?

Advantages
- 40% (general) / 60% (SC/women) subsidy under PMMSY
- Can be integrated with farming (chickens/ducks)
- Demand for fish is growing in UP and Bihar
- Needs little labour
Drawbacks
- Fish die if water or oxygen runs low
- Theft and predatory birds
- One harvest; money comes after 8–12 months
- Risk of flood or drought

PMMSY (Matsya Sampada) is the real subsidy scheme but is not in our list — alongside it, a bank loan through MUDRA (allied activity) or Stand-Up India (SC/ST/women). Working capital through KCC Fisheries.
§7Money
How the investment is worked out: PMMSY unit costs per hectare: construction of new grow-out pond ₹7.00 L/ha (Haryana Fisheries Dept page) + input cost for new carp ponds ₹4.00 L/ha (J&K Fisheries PMMSY pattern). Min = input cost only (own pond already present); max = new pond + inputs. Land cost not included.
Working capital: Input cost (seed, feed, medicine) is ₹4 L/ha — PMMSY gives a subsidy on this too.
PMMSY norms from the 2020 scheme; pages from 2023–24. The construction ceiling for hilly areas in J&K is ₹8.40 L/ha.
§8Export potential
Confirm the HS code in the DGFT ITC(HS) lookup before you export
Export council / board: MPEDA

§9Risks — where people fail
