§1What this business is

Soybeans are washed and soaked, wet-ground with about 10 parts water, boiled for 15–20 minutes, filtered to remove okara (pulp), then sweetened or flavoured, homogenised, pasteurised and filled. The small KVIC plan makes soya milk, soya paneer and curd with a ₹5.27 L machine set; the larger Samadhan plan fills 1,50,000 cans of 200 g a year. Soya milk has no cholesterol and suits people who cannot digest dairy lactose.

Capacity: Samadhan: 100 kg a day, 30,000 kg (1,50,000 cans of 200 g) a year; 45% in year 1. KVIC: quantity not clearly printed; cost of production ₹13.92 L at full capacity.

§2Is it right for you?

Who it is for

A food entrepreneur targeting health-conscious and lactose-intolerant buyers in towns and cities.

Who it is not for

Someone without hygiene discipline or a local market for fresh soya products.

Advantages

  • Cheap source of protein; no cholesterol
  • One line can also make tofu and soya curd
  • Low raw material cost — margins grow with volume
  • Fits PMFME food-processing support

Drawbacks

  • Many buyers dislike the beany taste
  • Short shelf life unless sterilised and well packed
  • Needs cold chain for fresh products
  • Low capacity use in early years (45% in year 1)

Skills you need

  • Soaking, grinding and cooking control
  • Pasteurisation and hygiene
  • Flavouring and taste trials
  • Local distribution

Why difficulty 3/5: Process is simple, but hygiene, shelf life and taste acceptance take work.

§3Market

Who buys

  • Health-conscious families
  • People who cannot digest dairy milk (lactose intolerance) and diabetics
  • Gyms, cafés and canteens

How it sells

  • Local dairies and grocery shops
  • Supermarkets and health stores
  • Direct delivery in towns

Good to know

  • Samadhan price: ₹38 per 200 g can in year 1, rising ₹2 a year.
  • Okara (pulp left after filtering) can be sold as cattle feed or used in snacks.
