The story
Kollam's cashew industry began in the 1920s, when traders started processing raw nuts imported from East Africa and grown locally, using the port at Kollam. Shelling and peeling were done by hand in large factories, employing mostly women. The town became India's cashew export centre and home of the Cashew Export Promotion Council. Rising costs and the shift of processing to other states and countries have shut many factories since the 2010s.
