Rules before you buy or sell
- Ammonia is listed in Schedule 1 of the Manufacture, Storage and Import of Hazardous Chemical (MSIHC) Rules, 1989. Above the threshold quantities, a unit must notify authorities, keep safety data sheets and an on-site emergency plan.
- Ammonia in cylinders or pressure vessels falls under the Gas Cylinder Rules, 2016 / Static and Mobile Pressure Vessels Rules (PESO).
Storage and handling
Toxic gas. Store in approved pressure vessels with leak detectors, water curtain and breathing sets; train staff for leaks.
