§1What this business is
You clean and grind wheat into atta and sell it in 1/5/10 kg packets. Buyers are kirana shops, hotels and dhabas, messes and households. A small chakki also does job-work grinding in the village.
Capacity: 200 kg an hour; 4,80,000 kg a year (60% to 80% utilisation, NIFTEM).
§2Is it right for you?
Who it is for
A small-town person in the wheat belt (UP, MP) who can build a local kirana and hotel network.
Who it is not for
Someone planning to take on big brands in a metro city without a distinct selling point.
Advantages
- Atta is a daily need — demand is assured
- Wheat is available locally in UP
- Start with a small chakki and grow into a packaged brand
- PMFME gives a 35% subsidy (max ₹10 L)
Drawbacks
- Competition from big brands (Aashirvaad etc.) in cities
- Thin margin; depends on the government MSP and market price of wheat
- High electricity cost
- Must follow FSSAI and packaging rules
Skills you need
- Judging wheat quality
- Machine maintenance
- Stock and season planning
- Local branding and distribution
Why difficulty 2/5: Simple process; the real work is buying raw material and selling.
§3Market
Who buys
- Households
- Bakeries and food businesses
- Hotels and restaurants
How it sells
- Kirana shops
- Supermarkets and modern retail
- Custom grinding for local families (chakki service)
Good to know

- Packaged atta is still mainly urban: towns and cities hold over 90% of the packaged market.
