§1What this business is
Wheat is cleaned, washed, soaked for 5–6 hours, sun-dried, roasted and cracked in a grinder; fine and coarse daliya are sieved out and packed. The Samadhan report also suggests daliya from mixed grains, maize, jowar, green pea and groundnut. Sold to grocers and wholesalers as a quick, filling breakfast food.
Capacity: KVIC: 600 quintals a year. Samadhan: 1.5 MT a day, 450 MT a year (60% use in year 1).
§2Is it right for you?
Who it is for
A flour-mill or grain trader who already buys wheat and sells to local grocers.
Who it is not for
Someone who cannot sell under their own brand — loose daliya earns little.
Advantages
- Simple process and easily available wheat
- Can start very small (₹2.40 L KVIC model)
- Steady household and institutional demand
- Mixed-grain daliya earns a better price
Drawbacks
- Thin gap between wheat price and daliya price
- Big brands sell daliya in every supermarket
- Sun-drying needs space and good weather
- Large working capital in the bigger model
Skills you need
- Wheat grading and buying
- Roasting and grinding control
- Hygienic packing
- Selling to grocers and wholesalers
Why difficulty 2/5: Simple process; success depends on wheat buying and selling a brand.
§3Market
Who buys
- Households wanting a quick, light breakfast
- Grocers and wholesalers
- Institutions that serve breakfast
How it sells
- Local grocers (kirana)
- Wholesale grain and food traders
- Own brand in retail packs
Good to know
- The reports describe growing demand for nutritious, easy-to-digest breakfast foods.
- Mixed-grain versions raise nutritional value (Samadhan report).
