§1What this business is

Maize, wheat and maize offal, groundnut cake, soybean meal, fish meal, bone meal, lysine, salt and vitamin premix are batched to a formula, ground to about 1 mm, mixed, blended with molasses (about 10%), steamed at 75–80 °C and pressed through a 2 mm die into pellets, which are cooled and bagged. A smaller unit makes mash feed with just a pulveriser and ribbon blender. Buyers are broiler and layer poultry farms.

Capacity: DC-MSME: 5,00,000 kg a year, run at 50% (2,50,000 kg). The UP MSME report prints no capacity; it runs at 45% in year 1.

§2Is it right for you?

Who it is for

Someone in a poultry belt who knows farmers and can buy grain well.

Who it is not for

Someone who cannot manage credit sales and grain stock.

Advantages

  • Poultry is India's fastest-growing livestock sector (the report says so)
  • Farms buy feed every week — steady demand
  • Can start small with a mash unit
  • Being close to farms saves freight

Drawbacks

  • Maize and soybean meal prices swing
  • Big integrators make their own feed
  • Farmers often buy on credit
  • A wrong formula hurts bird growth and your name

Skills you need

  • Feed formulation (bird nutrition)
  • Grain buying and storage
  • Running grinders and pellet mills
  • Farm sales and credit control

Why difficulty 3/5: Simple machines, but thin margins depend on grain buying and collecting dues.

§3Market

Who buys

  • Broiler farms
  • Layer (egg) farms
  • Small backyard poultry keepers
  • Poultry-input dealers

How it sells

  • Direct supply to farms
  • Feed and poultry-input dealers
  • Farmer producer organisations

Good to know

  • The UP MSME report says southern India holds the largest share of poultry production and consumption.
  • The DC-MSME profile says poultry-feed demand was growing at 10% a year when it was written.
