The story
Turmeric grows well in the red soils of Erode and nearby districts, and Erode became the region's main trading point. Traders, commission agents and cold stores gathered around regulated markets and the Erode Turmeric Merchants Association complex. Boiling, drying, polishing and grinding units grew around the trade. Erode Manjal received a GI tag in 2019.

ICRIER lists Erode turmeric's curcumin content at 2.5–4.5 per cent, with a 2024 price of ₹152 per kg.
