The story
Jalandhar's tanneries grew beside its sports-goods and footwear trades, which needed leather for balls, gloves and shoes. The units were moved into a planned Leather Complex on Kapurthala Road with a shared effluent treatment plant. Pollution limits have repeatedly shut the tanneries through court orders, and the treatment plant has struggled to handle the discharge. The cluster's future depends on meeting effluent norms.
In numbers
After the Punjab and Haryana High Court ordered shutdown of tanneries on October 29, all 61 units based at the Leather Complex on Kapurthala Road were lying closed.
