The story
Namakkal's layer industry began in the 1970s when a few farmers switched from crops to commercial egg farms. Dry weather, cheap maize from nearby districts and a strong network of lorry owners helped eggs reach markets across South India. Farmers organised feed mills, hatcheries and a daily egg price-setting system through the National Egg Coordination Committee. Today eggs from Namakkal go to Kerala, the Gulf, Africa and Sri Lanka.
