The story
Vapi sits on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad rail and highway corridor, close to Daman's tax-free zone of the past and to Mumbai's buyers. GIDC's estate filled with chemical, paper and pharmaceutical units, and later Sarigam and Umbergaon estates grew nearby. The Vapi Industries Association set up one of Asia's largest common effluent treatment plants to deal with pollution in the Damanganga and Kolak rivers.
