Where India produces it

   99.11% of India's coking coal came from Jharkhand in 2020-21 (44.387 million tonnes); BCCL (Dhanbad) is the main prime-coking coal producer.

Where imports come from

High: steel plants import most of their coking coal; total coal imports were 264.545 million tonnes in 2023-24 (all types).

Rules before you buy or sell

• Coal mining is regulated by the Ministry of Coal under the Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Act, 2015 and the MMDR Act, 1957.

Storage and handling

Stock in low heaps, compacted, away from heat; watch for self-heating.
