The story
Cuttack's silver filigree, called tarakasi, uses fine silver wire twisted and soldered into lace-like patterns. The craft has been practised in the old city for centuries, and the city's Durga Puja pandals are decorated with silver work. It is GI-registered as Cuttack Rupa Tarakasi, and the state plans a filigree hub for training and design.
In numbers
About 900 artisans (approx.) are engaged in silver filigree work in the Cuttack town area; plans are being drawn up to develop a silver filigree hub.
