The story
Kapurthala and Phagwara built a foundry and engineering base that supplied diesel engines and pump parts to Punjab's farms. Small foundries cast parts that machine shops finish for engine and auto-component makers. The Rail Coach Factory at Kapurthala also created demand for local engineering work. Most units still use old machinery and want testing and training facilities.
In numbers
The Foundry & General Engineering cluster had about 200 functional units, a turnover of about ₹150 crore, exports of about ₹70 crore and employment of about 4,000.
