The story
Pune's colleges and research bodies such as C-DAC produced engineers, and in the late 1990s MIDC built the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park at Hinjewadi on the city's west edge. Large Indian and foreign IT firms set up campuses there and later at Kharadi, Magarpatta and Talawade. Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai host bank technology centres, BPOs and data centres, so the whole Mumbai–Pune belt works as one IT region.
