The story

After Independence, Pune's dry climate, closeness to Mumbai and supply of engineers drew companies such as Bajaj Auto, Tata Motors (TELCO) and Kirloskar to Pimpri-Chinchwad and Bhosari. Hundreds of small suppliers grew around these plants, making forgings, castings, pressings and machined parts. From the 2000s new MIDC areas at Chakan, Talegaon and Ranjangaon brought Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Mahindra and many foreign part makers. Baramati has its own engineering and auto cluster.
