The story
The rulers of Ichalkaranji encouraged weavers in the early 1900s, and the first powerlooms came here before most of Maharashtra. Cotton from the Deccan and good water from the Panchganga river helped the trade grow, and the town is often called the 'Manchester of Maharashtra'. Over time many weavers moved to auto and shuttleless looms, and spinning mills, sizing units and process houses grew alongside. A powerloom mega cluster and a processing park were later sanctioned here.
In numbers
Ichalkaranji has over 150,000 powerlooms including auto and high-speed shuttleless looms, and 35 spinning mills, many of them 100% export-oriented units (2018).
