The story
India's first feature film, Raja Harishchandra, was made in Bombay by Dadasaheb Phalke in 1913, and studios grew in Dadar, Parel and Andheri from the 1930s. Money, actors, writers and technicians all gathered in Mumbai, and the Hindi film industry came to be called Bollywood. In 1977 the Maharashtra government set up Film City at Goregaon so that producers had large sets and outdoor locations inside the city. Television and streaming platforms have since made the suburbs from Andheri to Goregaon one large production belt.
