What it is

Dried coconut kernel. Milling copra is crushed for coconut oil; ball (edible) copra is eaten and used in sweets.

Where imports come from

Home-grown; copra imports were only US$ 7.05 million in 2024-25. Coconut oil imports (HS 1513, which also covers palm kernel oil) were US$ 163.72 million.

Rules before you buy or sell

• Farm-gate trade usually goes through a state APMC mandi or e-NAM; the state's market fee and trader licence rules apply.
• The Centre sets an MSP for milling and ball copra; NAFED procures under the Price Support Scheme.
• FSSAI licence or registration is needed to process, pack, store or sell it as food (Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006).

Storage and handling

Keep moisture near 6% to stop mould and aflatoxin.
