Rules before you buy or sell
- BIS Standard Mark (ISI) is compulsory under the Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control) Order, 2024: IS 513 (Part 1) and (Part 2), IS 648, IS 4397, IS 7226 and others. Each consignment needs a test certificate from a BIS-licensed maker.
- Imports of pig iron, sponge iron, ferro alloys, remelting scrap and semi-finished and flat or long steel are 'free' under ITC(HS) 2022 (as summarised in IMYB 2024), but QCO-covered grades still need the BIS mark.
- Check the current import and export policy for your exact 8-digit HS code in the DGFT ITC(HS) schedules.
Storage and handling
Keep indoors, wrapped, away from moisture and acid fumes; CR sheet rusts faster than HR.
