What it is

Alloy steel with chromium (and often nickel) that resists rust. Used for utensils, kitchen equipment, sinks, pipes, food and pharma machinery.

Low by volume (64,315 t imported in 2023-24 against 3.386 million tonnes made), but nickel and other alloying inputs are imported.

Rules before you buy or sell

• BIS Standard Mark (ISI) is compulsory under the Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control) Order, 2024: IS 6527 wire rod, IS 6528 wire, IS 6603 bars and flats, IS 6529 billets and others. Each consignment needs a test certificate from a BIS-licensed maker.
• Enforcement for stainless flat products IS 5522, IS 6911 and IS 15997 (serial 51 to 53) is suspended until 31 March 2027 by S.O. 3300(E) of 20 June 2026.
• Finished stainless utensils have their own BIS standards (e.g. IS 14756 cooking utensils, IS 13983 sinks).
• Check the current import and export policy for your exact 8-digit HS code in the DGFT ITC(HS) schedules.

Storage and handling

Keep away from carbon steel dust and grinding sparks, which cause rust spots; keep the PVC film on until use.
