Rules before you buy or sell
- BIS Standard Mark (ISI) is compulsory under the Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control) Order, 2024: IS 2062:2011, IS 1079:2017, IS 10748, IS 11513, IS 5986, IS 6240 and others in Schedule 1. Each consignment needs a test certificate from a BIS-licensed maker.
- Imports of pig iron, sponge iron, ferro alloys, remelting scrap and semi-finished and flat or long steel are 'free' under ITC(HS) 2022 (as summarised in IMYB 2024), but QCO-covered grades still need the BIS mark.
- Check the current import and export policy for your exact 8-digit HS code in the DGFT ITC(HS) schedules.
Storage and handling
Store coils on timber or rubber saddles under a roof; keep dry to stop rust. Use proper coil lifters, never chains on edges.
