The story
Duggirala, in the fertile Krishna delta near Tenali, grew into a major turmeric market for the crop grown in Guntur and Krishna districts. Local units boil, dry, polish and grind turmeric before it moves to traders across India. A cluster programme helped units adopt energy-efficient pulverisers and better grading. Growers were also encouraged to plant high-curcumin varieties.
In numbers
The Duggirala turmeric processing cluster had 26 units with a turnover of Rs 860 million and employment of 800 (2010-11 data).
